Writers Beside The Square

When: Every Tuesday, 6pm-8pm

Where: Waterstones London – Trafalgar Square, The Grand Building, Trafalgar Square, London, WC2N 5EJ (Nearest Stations: Charing Cross, Embankment, and Leicester Square)

Details: Every Tuesday evening, between 6pm-8pm, the Writers Beside the Square meet at the Waterstones café in Trafalgar Square and write while the café is closed to members of the public. The group is free to attend and open to anyone. If you wish to join us for some quality writing time explain to a staff member in store that you’re there for the writing group or come up and find us on the first floor.

The venue has working lifts and we have access to both toilets and disabled toilets. The café itself closes at 6pm, if you want a hot drink please bring one in with you. There are plenty of Costas, Prets and Caffé Neros to choose from in the local area. If you do have a drink, don’t take it downstairs to the shop floor for fear of damaging books.

Please note that the café has plugs but no USB charging ports. If you want to bring a laptop with you, make sure it is fully charged.

Seasonal Events

Our main seasonal event will take place in November. The details of our meet-ups for November 2026 will be posted here as they are confirmed, closer to the event.

We also expect to run SummeRilla (a walking and writing tour around London) in the summer. Once the date is confirmed we will post it here.

Advertise Your Event Here!

If you run a writing group, or want to host some write-ins of your own, we will be happy to assist you. We will be happy to promote your group or event via this website and our mailing list, provided your event is open to everyone to attend without having to sign-up to another website, and is free for people to attend. To inform us of your event, whether it is a one-off event or a recurring event, please e-mail us, providing the full details, at: associatedwritersoflondon@gmail.com

If you want to host your own write-in, we can offer the following advice:

  • Choose an appropriate venue: This doesn’t have to be in central London. We welcome events taking place in all parts of London. An ideal venue will have adequate space for you and your guests to sit, good lighting, and not be too noisy. Wi-Fi access and working toilets are always welcomed, and the ideal venue will also be wheelchair accessible. Depending on the venue you may need to reserve space beforehand. For coffee shops we recommend that you purchase food and drinks from the venue.
  • Schedule: It is up to you if you run your event to a specific schedule. Many of our write-ins use the schedule of 15 mins chat/45 mins writing. You can use this, or use a different schedule, such as one with shorter writing sprints. Whatever you decide, it is best to advise your guests of what your planned schedule is, in advance if possible.
  • Writing: We recommend having silent writing sprints, especially during the November challenge. These have been shown to be very productive. However, we are not prescriptive about this. But make sure you manage the expectations of your guests, so that they know what to expect.

You are welcome to contact us on associatedwritersoflondon@gmail.com if you would like any further advice, or have any other questions about events.
